Aloe Blacc: He needed a dollar, he probably got one, he probably got lots, which is fine by us

Relative newcomer Aloe Blacc is completely not a newcomer! He’s been releasing music since 1995 when he was part of rap duo Emanon with producer Exile. Emanon released 6 albums in total and even toured Europe and America. Aloe (real name Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III… WE KNOW!) took time out from Emanon to go to uni on a scholarship to study Psycho-Linguistics and Communication.

In 2003 Aloe went on his solo career, signing to Stones Throw Records and releasing an EP. His first album came out three years later in 2006 and then in 2010 he signed to Epic Records and released his second record Shine Through and his first UK single I Need A Dollar, also the theme tune for HBO show How To Make It In America. Blacc’s future is exciting, we can’t wait to see it unfurl…

DMX Speaks on issues with Jay-Z and not being a fan of Drake

Even though DMX is locked up and about to be released on the 1st of July 2011 he continues to cause controversy in the HipHop industry. Below is the latest interview he granted Vibe magazine whilst in prison.
Vibe: So you’re just not feeling his music then? (Drake)
DMX: Yeah, I don’t like him. It ain’t nothing personal. I don’t like his stuff. He is talented. He has a little wordplay here and there, but when I see him and here him it’s like—‘Money, I’m not rockin with that.’

Vibe: Damn. Have you even been able to have a conversation with Jay after that? I remember when it happened.
DMX: I’ve not talked to him yet, since. But I had a show November 18th, before I got locked up–No November 12th I had the show. And somebody in the crown was like ‘What’s up with Jay-Z’ and I was like ‘Fuck Jay-Z’. And it ended up all over the place. So he called Swizz, Swizz called me, and he tells Swizz ‘Yoo, why your man dissin me? I was gonna do a song with him’—Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Fucking bullshit. I don’t wanna hear that shit. And like ‘Yo, can you just get him to say he ain’t mean it’—NO! I’m not saying that. What I did say is if he wanna talk to me, I’m man enough to let him know why it’s ‘Fuck You’, but it’s still ‘Fuck You’! That’s what it is. I’ll let you know why, I can do that. It ain’t like you gotta worry about me running up on you shooting you. It ain’t that serious. You don’t owe me nothing. But if you want an explanation as to why it’s ‘Fuck You’, I’ll be more than happy to tell you why.

STEALTH MC is the Nigerian born London based rapper who's been doing this "music thing" for more than a second, minute or hour.

He first took to the stage at his high school talent show and promptly set about entering battles up and down London, from Choice FM's Rapology, being judged by the likes of Mystique and Iceberg Slimm, to clashing with other London crews on pirate radio.

Leaving London for university in Bristol lead to the start of new partnerships that would eventually lead to the release of his sell-out debut single, Back to the Mothership, produced by Living Proof and released on High Noon records gaining critical acclaim across the board;

Yung Kurt Feat. TeeBeeO - No Be Play (Listen & Download) Published by DjLanre

Born in the 80s, in Lagos, Nigeria, Taiwo Okalawon formerly known as Yung Kurt was raised alongside five siblings including his twin brother by both of his parents. Growing up as a young man in Ikotun, Lagos was a struggle but a struggle worth living. He developed an interest for music by watching his father play one of Africa’s most treasured instruments, the talking drum. His father was a professional drummer for the legendary King Sunny Ade.

Having a musical icon in the family gave Taiwo the desire to become a musician but it wasn’t until year 2000 that he put his plans to practise. He started off by getting involved in rap battles on a social networking site (nigeriaentertainment.com) where budding music artists all over Nigeria would post lyrics, poems and have textual battles online. When creating his personal profile for the site, he realised that he would need a unique name that would not only separate him from others but one in which he could gain recognition. Because of the distinctive cut left on his face from childhood, he named himself Kurtfaze.

Word Premier: EDGE - HURRICANE (Listen & Download) Published by DjLanre

Meet EDGE, a budding singer, songwriter and producer. Real name, Stephen Colbador was born in Lagos on the 29th of November 1982. Under the label, Soundcave Records, he is recording his debut album which he has described as a fusion of Hip Hop, Soul, R & B and of course, that African flavor that makes the music ours.

He started singing at the age of 3 and credits his life as a singer to his late father who exposed him to music at an early age. His parents also noticed his rhythmic body movements and encouraged him to be a dancer. He joined a dance group, “Smooth Criminals” which also had the award winning duo, P-Square, as members. While in the group, he was discovered by his label and encouraged to combine his singing and dancing skills. Skills that have gone on to bring us the man we now know as EDGE.

south-east back in 2010.

The man has certainly not sat back and relaxed. On the song, he encourages fellow up and coming artistes to ‘keep on keeping on’ and

Timeless Taboo: New Attacks on African Spirituality

On January 13, 2010 Pat Robertson, founder and chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network,  stated that Haiti “swore a pact to the devil.”  This was one day after a 7.0 earthquake rocked the island nation resulting in massive loss of life. The “pact” Robertson so confidently mentioned to various media outlets was a reference to the Haitian Revolution, more specifically, the Bwa Kayiman (Bois Caiman) Ceremony in August of 1791.
The event is significant because Africans of varying ethnicities joined together in a traditional ceremony to affirm that they would no longer remain enslaved.  The insurrection in Saint-Domingue (modern Haiti), in what would become known as the Haitian Revolution, resulted in the establishment of a Haitian republic in 1804.  The “devil” Robertson spoke of was a reference to the African gods invoked by Haitians to overthrow their French oppressors.

This practice of referring to anything in the realm of African spirituality as evil or devilish is a continuation of the propaganda used by missionaries, slave traders, and colonizers ever since they ventured onto the continent.  Enslaved Africans were treated as a people without culture.  They were reduced to being treated as cargo.  Africans were viewed as heathens because they had their own religious traditions prior to the introduction of Christianity and Islam.  These traditions include ancestor veneration, systems of initiation and respect for the natural environment.

African Traditions in the Americas

African spiritual systems, which fall under the category of African Traditional Religion (ATR), are the traditions that have sustained us since time immemorial.  Enslaved Africans brought these traditions to such places as Haiti, Brazil, Cuba, New Orleans, Florida, and South Carolina. They can be seen in the burial custom of placing items on the graves of deceased family members, knowledge of certain ritualistic and medicinal practices, known under various names as juju, hoodoo, rootwork, etc.  They can be seen in the tradition of adorning trees with bottles, vessels, and other objects to protect the household through invocation of the dead as noted in places like Mississippi, South Carolina, and Virginia. by Ezinne Adibe

DaVinChe - Ready To Go . Published by DjLanre

As the title indicates, the multi-instrumentalist and UK Grime producer is raring to launch his new found direction out to the masses and send shockwaves across the scene showcasing his vocals for the very first time.  “Ready To Go” is available as a free download from DaVinChe's Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/DavincheMusic  and features UK female MC Baby Blue who has previously worked with Estelle, Wretch 32 and Sway.

From start to finish, the track can’t help but drive the listeners to head bang due to the infectious drum pattern, along with the minimal but engaging melody. The song caters to a diverse crowd, from your everyday club goer to a music thirsty teenager. His message is clear cut yet smooth and very catchy. “Ready To Go” will instantly become a sing a long not ready to fade away in your memory.

DaVinChe is used to creating this effect and experimenting with other genres having produced various hits for UK Urban royalty such as Tinie Tempah, Tinchy Stryder, Shola Ama, Giggs and Kano. He also runs his own label Dirty Canvas which he started in 2007 developing new UK acts such as Cleo Sol.

Lauryn Hill Announces Sixth Child On The Way By Rohan Marley.... Wow

Now we feel kind of bad for making fun of Lauryn’s get up in Detroit on Saturday.
During her performance, Ms. Hill made the announcement, without much fanfare, that her brood of baby Marleys is set to grow by one very soon.

And all she said to the crowd was: “I’m going to be taking time off to give birth.”
Lauryn and her still married baby-daddy “spiritual husband” Rohan Marley currently have five kids: 13-year-old Zion, 12-year-old Selah, 9-year-old Joshua, 7-year-old John, and 3-year-old Sarah. Considering the vice grip Rohan Marley has had on Lauryn’s life since they got together in the late 90s, we would be really surprised if he wasn’t this kid’s dad too. Still, Lauryn didn’t come right out and say the new baby would be Bob’s grandkid too.

This isn’t the first tie Lauryn’s hinted at a sixth pregnancy. Back in March, during a show at Club Nokia in L.A., Lauryn told the audience “I keep having these children. I don’t know if I’m the most fertile woman in America.” Good luck to Miss Hill and her family.

Twins Affair - Oh Bad Gan (Listen & Download) Published by DjLanre

The most succesful music artiste in Africa is a twin and honestly do feel the reason for their success is first and foremost, the chemistry between them. Like the P Square brothers, Twins Affair - a duo made up of two brothers produce their on records which permits for them to interprete a record just as they want it when they write.

Twins Affair is a work in progress and they are putting in all the work to stay consistent, relevant over a long period of time. 'Oh bad gan' features a rap with near flawless delivery and talks on the topic of being overlooked by the tickle of your fancy.

The twin admire the duo of Peter and Paul Okoye for their consistency.

Their passion for music is unmatched. Twins Affair is made of Taye and Kehinde Olusola. Both music graduates from Delta State University, Abraka. They started music professionally 4 years ago as singers and music producers working with a handful of upcoming artistes including Finland based Nigerian Phemo, Tesleem d don and others. The twin earlier collaborated with LKT (of  'Yahoozee' and 'follow follow me' featuring P Square fame) signed to Edlyne Records and a collaboration with Ruggedman is in the works.
