Sources told the Sunday Mirror that he was desperate to keep it a secret from X Factor bosses, but insiders at the ITV show have said that his success exemplifies how The X Factor provides the platform to change lives.
In an interview in October, Sterling said: 'I'm living proof that you don't need to turn to crime to earn a living.
'Through my music, the work I've done with other under-privileged youngsters and X Factor, I've finally made Mum and my grandparents proud.'
