GADGET: The Android smartphone that runs for two months on a charge!

There’s nothing more annoying than getting half way through the day and having to frantically scrabble through your stuff for a charger, with battery life proving the bane of modern smartphones. Even the very best handsets – like the HTC One (M8) struggle to last more than a day under heavy use. Thankfully, desperately trying to shut down apps and turn off features could be a thing of the past thanks to the Philips W6618, a smartphone capable of lasting months between charges! Where have you been all this time?

That’s weeks of regular use, too, with the Philips W6618 capable of ticking over for an even more impressive two months when on standby, with a standby time of 1,604 hours. Running out of charge definitely won’t be a problem then, but we’d imagine finding the charger after that amount of time will be! Hint: try the pile of dust and cobwebs.

So how does Philips do it? The company has squeezed an impressive 5,300 mAh out of its battery – more than doubling the capacity of most smartphone batteries, and letting the handset run for longer between charges. Imagine the world-saving possibilities; you’d be able to play FIFA 14 all the way home without worrying about your phone keeling over half way!

Other specs on the Philips W6618 are pretty unexceptional though, including the 5-inch 540×960 screen, quad-core 1.3GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Android Jellybean promises to get the job done, but it would be nice to see the later Android KitKat in place. Just launched for $273 (£162) in China, there’s currently no word on UK pricing availability for the Philips W6618, but watch this space.
