GADGET: Finally, decent earphones to go with your iPod: Apple to buy Beats headphones

However popular the venerable iPod and the rest of Apple’s music-related gadgets get, we’ve always been left massively disappointed by the quality of the headphones given away alongside. Things have improved a bit of late with the redesigned EarPods – and nothing could be as bad as early iPod and iPhone earphones, for example – but it looks like Applecould finally get its act together if a deal to buy Beats headphones goes through. An iPod or iPhone where you don’t need to go out and buy your own headphones? Yes please!

When it comes to music playback on our Apple gadgets, we’ve generally just given up on the headphones that Apple includes in the box. If chasing better audio quality it seems easier to just plug in our own earphones and be done with it. Hop on a train or any other public transport, and you can easily see just how bad some of Apple’s earphones have been in the past – with so much noise escaping outside the earphones we start to wonder if people have put them in back to front!

It seems like Apple could be readying a colossal $3.2bn (£1.89bn) deal to fix that though and buy headphone company Beats though. And while Beats – originally co-founded by hip-hop star Dr Dre and music producer Jimmy Iovine – has a bit of a reputation for putting style and a premium price tag above audio fidelity – it’s still capable of producing some cracking headphones and speakers. Headphones like the Beats Studio Wireless.

It’s not just the hardware side of things that Apple would be able to get its hands on either, with Beats also having its own fledgling music streaming service. A threat to iTunes? Not if Apple is control!

But it’s the headphone bit of the deal we’re currently more excited by! If the deal – reported by sources including the Wall Street Journal – does go ahead, it’d be great to finally see some decent earphones given away with Apple products. Because let’s face it, we have to pay enough money for some of Apple’s gadgets, so it seems only fair to get a premium audio experience to go alongside.

It could even be a chance for Apple to improve audio quality on its MacBook Pro laptop lineup – there are loads of exciting possibilities!
