GADGET: Got a Samsung Galaxy S3? No Android KitKat for you

One of the things we love about Android is the fact updates are rolled out across so many different devices, often letting you use the latest version of the OS even if your phone is getting on a bit. Sometimes things aren’t meant to be though, and we can now sadly reportthat Android KitKat won’t be making an appearance on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

We gave the Samsung Galaxy S3 five stars when we first got our hands on one back in 2012, explaining: “The Samsung Galaxy S3 is quite simply the best Android smartphoneyou can buy right now. It’s fast, has an amazing screen, lots of extra features, a cracking camera and excels in almost every area.”

Although things have moved on, the Galaxy S3 remains a brilliant smartphone, so it’s easy to see why millions of people are still hanging onto them, and hoping for the latest updates. Sadly, KitKat – the latest version of Android – won’t be coming your way.

The lack of support is down to the hardware itself, according to a statement on SamMobile, which highlights a lack of memory as the main bottleneck to running KitKat effectively.

With only 1GB of RAM ticking away inside both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, both smartphones would reportedly struggle when it comes to things like multi-tasking, so Samsung has decided to restrict KitKat to LTE versions of the S3 family only (which boasts 2GB of RAM).

It seems like a shame though, as KitKat has made an appearance on phones with lower power and lower memory – such as the Moto G, which itself features only 1GB of RAM.

Will you be sticking with your Samsung Galaxy S3 if you can’t upgrade to KitKat? Or is it time to splash the cash and get yourself a new HTC One (M8)!
