The Mayor’s Office of Entertainment and Office of International Affairs Welcome Alex Gibney’s New Documentary Finding Fela to Atlanta
Film will premiere at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema on August 15th beginning a week-long run with a series of events
ATLANTA – The Mayor’s Office of Entertainment and Office of International Affairs announce their partnership with film distributor Kino Lorber, Inc. to premiere the documentary “Finding Fela,” by Academy Award winning director Alex Gibney. The premiere will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.
Finding Fela tells the story of visionary and pioneer Fela Kuti (1938 – 1997), his music, and the impact he made through social and political activism. This in-depth portrait of Fela Kuti will inspire audiences with stories of his advocacy for democracy in Nigeria, and his mission to fight against the global oppression of all people. He also moved many through the rhythm and cultural relevancy of Afrobeat, a musical genre he developed.
“The universal message of courage and dignity showcased in Finding Fela will resonate with many Atlantans,” said International Affairs Director Claire Angelle. “It illustrates the diversity of our great city.”
Finding Fela also explores the creative process behind the Broadway musical “Fela!” that was directed and co-conceived by acclaimed choreographer Bill T. Jones.
“Finding Fela makes a gripping statement about the power of art to effect social, political and personal change,” said Entertainment Director LaRonda Sutton. “The City of Atlanta looks forward to work on more international film projects as it establishes itself as an entertainment hub.”
The premiere will include the participation of the Mayor’s Office, the Consulate General of Nigeria, and the Africa Atlanta 2014 initiative. A Q&A with producer Stephen Hendel and Sahr will conclude the official program.
