MUSIC: Duncan Daniels Feat Aduke Okin - "Six Past Six"

There is an old saying, “Good music needs no introduction”. This is very true in the case of this very unique record titled “Six Past Six". The mood is reminiscent of the golden age of African classic duets; one that comes to mind is “Wait for me” by Onyeka Onwenu and King Sunny Ade. The story of two individuals discovering love or a certain chemistry in which they mutually give in to these feelings and set out to explore them at a certain time of the day; six minutes past six. The mood is laid back yet musters a rhythmic afro beat, mixed in a soulful atmosphere and two very passionate vocalists deliver a very folksy performance on the track(Neo Afro Soul). The clarity in production shouldn’t be left unmentioned, presenting subtle dynamics as rhythm and melody collide.

Duncan Daniels is no stranger when it comes to versatility in musical genre’s and many will be surprised to find out that this track was written, performed, mixed and produced by Duncan Daniels with additional lyrics by the Lagos based folk singer Aduke Okin, her voice like sweet rivers of honey, washing you in until you are fully submerged in her awesomeness. The two is said to have met a little over a year ago in Harlem, NY, where Miss Aduke had visited and had been performing. Fast forward to present day and they’ve created this beautiful record titled “Six Past Six”.

Duncan Daniels who recently got a nomination at the 2016 NEA Awards for Best Diaspora Artist, I believe is switching gears a bit and trying to tap into the current Afro beat surge that is growing in the diaspora. If you are in the New York City area, you can catch his upcoming performance at the International Entertainment Festival on July 30th. The consistency Daniels has shown over the years is indeed getting his efforts noticed by industry peers across the globe. We hope to receive more great music from Duncan Daniels in the near future.
