A legend in the game Sneakbo meets a legend in the making Backroad Gee together mark an important part of history as they produce a current mix of their influences on a soon to be UK street anthem. The two artists display a performance that reflects years of chemistry despite this only being their first track together.
It goes without saying how pivotal Sneakbo has been for the UK scene and the path he paved for many. Known for his innovative musical blend of melodic elements and a gangster street-like spin. The Brixton rapper has had a decade in the game and is still revolutionising and moving forward as he always has. Hot off the back of releases such as ‘Come A Long Way’ and his recent Plugged-In freestyle, continuing to please his 1 million monthly listeners across Spotify.
Backroad Gee is currently one of the most in demand rappers in the UK to date, touching various genres and turning the tracks cold. Recent releases saw him hop on the drill scene with the ‘Moonwalk Slide’ alongside Chip and RV, and more recently with Lost Girl for a Garage vibe in ‘Rockabye’. The new school artist with old Grime waves, gives this track an interesting angle, crossing over generations himself and with Sneakbo.
‘Sneakbo and Backroad’ approach this song with tenacious energy and flows that are far from stagnant. Chemistry wise it is incomparable; this was a true collaboration co-written together as the two of them finish each other’s bars, curving from one artist to the next in smooth fashion. Sonically you can hear the hotpot of London’s influences in top form with African and West Indian influences evident between the two. A signature beat typical of Sneakbo, with spacious drums to leave space for the artists energy and a hypnotic melody to ensure depth throughout the song. A rowdy and unforgettable chorus takes centre stage.
Filmed in North Greenwich and riddled with London culture, overlooking the O2 arena and areas of the city, providing the view from communities reminiscent of their own. They also quite literally brought their community, with a big party turn out to match the vibe the song brings aurally. Cars and motorbikes burning rubber alongside the urban street party vibe they are both familiar with in London, leaves us with a perfectly suited video for both the artists and the track.
Both of their explosive styles and flows operate really well together in what was an unexpected but appreciated link up. ‘WAG1’ is a thunderous release from the two prolific artists and a solid intergenerational collaboration as both artists tee up for a successful year of growth and hard music.
