GADGET: Mitime: The iPhone app that wakes you up when your train is delayed!

We’ve all been there. You’ve got your journey time nailed to arrive at the platform just as the train pulls in – but then one day your elegantly executed timetable backfires when a leaf fall on the track 10 miles away and doubles your commute time. How would you like a heads up every time you need to add a buffer to your journey when something goes awry on the roads and rail network? That’s what new iPhone app Mitime aims to do, intelligently adjusting your alarms for you to boot.

Google Now on mobiles already estimates journey times and nudges you when it’s time to leave, but Mitime for iOS takes things a step further by actually adjusting your alarm for you, waking you up earlier if the trains are down or there’s a major delay on the motorway.

The service, which was dreamed up by entrepreneur Matt Antwis when he missed aninternational flight, works by asking you how long you need to get ready as well as where you need to go, then polls data services including BAA (for flights), Network Rail, the Highways Agency and TfL (Transport for London), so unless your commute is by hovercraft or chopper you should be covered. If it looks like you need to set off earlier, it’ll take the liberty of waking you up ahead of schedule, so you’ll never miss that all important meeting.

Mitime is free and available on the iTunes App Store now. Not rocking an iPhone? Noworries: Android fans will be able to enjoy similar tech soon, as Mitime is set to launch on Google’s OS as Windows Phone at the end of the month.
