GADGET: Where's the gadget? Hidden wearable tech we want to see!

Apple may be supersizing its iPhone 6, but the future could see smartphones ditched altogether, with no end to the possibilities of wearable gadgets. LG’s working hard on its newwearable Android watch and Apple’s Beats purchase is making us wonder about what headphones will look like in the future, but why stop there? With voice recognition tech getting ever better, there’s not even any need for screens anymore on lots of devices. Here are some of the cool wearable gadgets we’d love to see in the future!

Glass-rivalling smart earphones Concepts like Google Glass are truly brilliant, but is the nerdy-looking screen absolutely necessary? It’s easy enough to get verbal confirmation when you’re carrying out tasks, so in theory most things could be done without the heads-up display. Imagine a pair of earphones – no more conspicuous than a regular set of earbuds – that could carry out most of the same functions as Google Glass. Turn-by-turn navigation straight in your ear, music, calendar and birthday reminders – could smart earphones be the future? They’d certainly be better than Google Glass for people not wanting to stand out. Of course, Siri through your EarPods already does some smart things, but that’s with an expensive (and relatively bulky) iPhone attached to the other end. We’ve rather have Google Now in an earpiece and nothing else!

The truly weather resistant coat It’s all well and good having a Goretex jacket, but sometimes it’d be better if you could just stay well away from the nasty weather! So how about a jacket with a built-in CPU and 4G, capable of getting its own weather updates from services like AccuWeather, and keeping you informed well in advance of any showers? Sure, you can always glance at your smartphone, but it’d be a lot more difficult to ignore a talking coat! And even if you did get caught in a shower, it’d be nice to have a comforting voice in your hood informing you: “Don’t worry, it’ll stop raining in five minutes.” It’ll probably be wrong, mind…

Money-obsessed jeans… We’ve all been there; standing in a queue, frantically foraging for that final coin to pay for your shopping before you get there, only to find out you didn’t quite add up the pennies correctly. That could all be a thing of the past with our new smartjeans – simply tap a button and they could announce exactly how much is in your pocket. “You currently have seven pounds and eight pence. And a piece of old chewing gum. And a fluff-covered washer.” It could be a bit embarrassing if you’ve just claimed you can’t afford the drinks though: “Sorry to butt in, but you currently have twenty five pounds in your pocket, plenty for a round…” Yeah, thanks jeans, thanks a lot!

Time to wash that hoodie! Smart, wearable items don’t need to simply replace the functions on your smartphone, but could offer up a whole new world of functionality. How about a hoodie that knows when it’s time to be washed? “Eww, starting to whiff a bit Dave, please wash me…” Obviously you can tell when things get that bad, so perhaps a heads-up before it gets to that point would be handy. “I reckon there’s about one more outing left in me yet; then I want washing!”

These shoes were made for walking! The idea of smartshoes may seem like a nutty concept, but it’s actually already been done. Turn-by-turn directions from your shoes, silently, with your toes being tickled to let you know which direction to head in? Yup, already on the cards! Maybe there’s scope to build in even more tech though – shoes that lead you towards your friends, perhaps? Shoes that lead to checked in places on FourSquare andFacebook could be perfect!
