GADGET: YouTube buying Twitch: Game streaming powers incoming!

Game streaming service Twitch is blowing up right now and it’s got Google green-eyed with envy. While YouTube has plenty of gamers uploading their clips to Google’s video platform, Twitch.tv’s live-streaming powers are a whole lot more lucrative – and that’s why YouTube is eyeing up the game-streaming video platform for a cool $1 billion (£594 million) purchase! Read on for all the details, and to find out what that means for gamers.

According to Variety, Google’s YouTube has reached a deal to snap up video gamestreaming service Twitch for a deal worth more than $1 billion, which is said to be an all-cash offer – and it could be announced very soon.

If the deal goes through, it would be YouTube’s largest pinch since Google acquired it back in 2006 for $1.65 billion (£980 million), although according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, acquisition talks are still at an early stage and the deal isn’t imminent just yet. Still, it looks like both companies are interested, and it could be one of the biggest deals to go down this year if it happens. YouTube’s on top of the world when it comes to online video, but its live streaming doesn’t quite compare to what Twitch has to offer, especially for gaming and eSports – this deal could help boost its live offerings and help give Twitch an even bigger platform, and resources.

Twitch has been able to pull in huge amounts of streaming numbers since it first launched back in 2011, and according to the company in February, it had more than 45 million monthly unique visitors to the site, along with over one million people who create and stream gaming content online – huge numbers that YouTube would love to tap into for gaming and its own live streaming platform. Interestingly, Microsoft was also reportedly in the running to buy Twitch – but the inevitable Xbox exclusivity may have been a turn off for the Twitch team, which worked hard to get a PS4 app ready for launch last year.

YouTube buying Twitch could change up both companies for the better, but is it a deal you want to see happen? Do you think Twitch should remain independent? We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest as soon as we hear it, but do let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
