GADGETS: Steam Machines delayed until 2015: Controller redesigned again!

We’ve been almost dribbling with anticipation ever since news of Valve’s Steam Machines custom gaming PCs first leaked, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little while longer yet. Initially scheduled for launch this year, Valve’s ultimate gaming gadget has been postponed until 2015 following issues with its clever new controllers – it appears they’re too clever by half.

It’s a shame, as we seemed so close to the launch of the hotly anticipated Steam Machines. 300 of the Linux-powered gaming devices had already made their ways into the hands of lucky beta testers, with the kit comprising the machine itself, a futuristic-looking Steam controller, cables, Wi-Fi modules and Valve’s very own Steam operating system.

It’s the controller that’s causing the delay at the moment though, and we’ve already seen a number of revisions – not least removing a central touchpad that appeared on initial prototypes.

Going into more detail about the delay, Valve explains on its blog: “We’re now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers. It’s generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we’ll be able to make the controller a lot better. Of course, it’s also keeping us pretty busy making all those improvements. Realistically, we’re now looking at arelease window of 2015, not 2014.”

It’s certainly a shame we won’t be able to get our hands on the Steam Machines this year then, but if it means the end gadget will be better, easier to use and more polished, then we certainly can’t complain!

Valve continues:

“Obviously we’re just as eager as you are to get a Steam Machine in your hands. But our number one priority is making sure that when you do, you’ll be getting the best gamingexperience possible. We hope you’ll be patient with us while we get there. Until then, we’ll continue to post updates as we have more stories to share.”

Sounds good to us. In the meantime, check out some of the Steam Machines that are on the way!
