GADGETS: Five amazing secrets of iOS 8

iOS 8 is finally here, and if you've got a compatible device (sorry, iPhone 4 users) then you'll no doubt have already downloaded the update. As usual, there are plenty of improvements to speak of, but not all of them are as obvious as you might think. Below we've listed our five favourite enhancements, so have a read and educate yourself about just how swell the eighth version of iOS really is.

Greater control over exposure on photos

Apple has always tried to keep one step ahead of its rivals when it comes to photographic prowess, and while on the surface the iOS 8 CAMERA APP might not look all that different, it does come with one new feature which could revolutionise the way you capture the world around you - and no, we're not talking about the much-hyped time-lapse feature, either. You can now manually control the exposure level of your shot before you take it - tap and hold your finger on the screen and a slider appears, which you can move to change the exposure. This isn't a totally new concept - the Chinese-made Xiaomi Mi4 has the same functionality - but it's a welcome addition.

Find out which apps are gobbling up your battery

The iPhone has always been better at holding onto its battery juice than many ANDROID devices, but as Apple adds more and more functions to iOS, it's inevitable that this world-famous stamina is going to drop. Thankfully, you can keep an eye on what apps are consuming the most power in iOS 8. Go to "General" in the settings menu, "Usage" then "Battery Usage". You'll be presented with a list of the prime offenders, which will allow you to decide which ones are going to get the chop in order to preserve your vital power.

Use HealthKit to help a person in dire need

HealthKit is part of Apple's drive to make everyone look after themselves a little bit more, and allows apps to pool data to give you a realistic view on your daily exercise regime. However, it has a surprising upshot - because it records your general health and medical details, it can be used in moments of emergency. If you find someone has collapsed in the street and can't communicate their problem, you need only swipe right on their iPhone lock screen (you don't even need to unlock it) and tap "Emergency". Tapping "MEDICAL ID" brings up their information - assuming they've added it to the app, of course.

Share all of your purchased content with friends and family

One of the drawbacks of this digital age we live in is that you can't just lend a DVD or CD to someone anymore - most of the media we consume is digital, and therefore tied to a single account. Thankfully, Apple feels your pain and has introduced Family Sharing. You can now share your purchased content with up to six close friends or family -- assuming they have iTunes or ICLOUD accounts, of course. All of the content is still yours, and the other people in the group are still able to purchase their own movies and music.

Hide the new QuickType suggestion box

Predictive typing has finally arrived on the iPhone, and you'll find that words are suggested as you're typing out a line of text. This is a time-saver for some, but for others the suggestion bar is merely something which gets in the way. Thankfully, you can suppress the bar by tapping and then dragging it downwards. To activate it, simply perform the opposite movement with your finger.
