Changing times: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is currently Britain’s biggest music success story.

His album X has sold more than a million copies in the UK alone, he’s up for four Brit Awards and three Grammys and is playing three huge Wembley Stadium gigs this summer.

Oh and the Yorkshire-born chart-topper is also mates with Taylor Swift, Elton Johnand half the celebrity world.

Not bad for a someone who began, in his own words, as “a really geeky ginger kid with spectacles and a massive guitar”.

Here in an exclusive extract from his new book Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter reveals how he made it to the top after an early life as a school truant and sleeping on the London Underground...

Mum and Dad made sure they stimulated us rather than leaving us to our own devices.

For years we didn’t have terrestrial TV in our house.

We didn’t even have a TV licence because my mum didn’t want us to be sat in front of the TV all the time.

Instead, we’d watch one video a day – maybe Blackadder or Pingu – then go off and do something else, like draw, paint or play music.

We didn’t own a video games console and I honestly think that was one of the best things my mum never did.

So all the time that my friends were playing Grand Theft Auto, I was sat there practising the guitar over and over and over again.

To this day, I don’t know what to do on an Xbox or a PlayStation.
The times are a changing
