GADGET: Meet the Sony RX100 III: SLR skills in a pocket-size package

Meet the Sony RX100 III: SLR skills in a pocket-size package

We’re big fans of Sony’s compact cameras, so we’re chuffed to bits that the company’s just announced its latest, the RX100 III. As the name suggests, it’s the third instalment in theRX100 series, and it brings some pretty natty image processing skills from Sony’s SLR range to play.

It may look almost identical to its predecessors, but the RX100 III features Sony’s Bionz X image processor, which is also found in its Alpha A77 II SLR. It has the same sensor as in the RX100 II, but with a new Zeiss lens for wide-angle shots.

That lens should also make for some pretty spectacular bokeh shots (where the background is blurred).

1080p HD videos have less compression, so will look sharper, and Sony’s bolted on a retractable OLED viewfinder, so you won’t feel like a tourist when you’re taking your shots.

Wi-Fi and NFC enable wireless sharing, and it can take stills in 4K resolution.

Jolly good. It should land sometime next month, just in time for your summer hols. The price is yet to be announced, but it shouldn’t be much more than the RX100 II, which costs around £600.
