GADGET: Say Hi to the £899 Apple iMac, Apple's most affordable all-in-one

The iMac is one of the best desktop computers around, but until now, it hasn’t been cheap. Apple has just launched an entry-level version that costs just £899, which is pretty reasonable, considering what you get. There’s a lot to like about the shiny 21.5-incher – read on to see what!

Although it may be the baby of the family, there’s still a Full HD 1080p screen, with pin-sharp images and millions of colours.

The basic model has a 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, capable of clock speedsup to 2.7GHz. Add in 8GB of RAM to help run the Mac OS, and the most affordable iMac yet should actually be pretty nippy.

Corners needed to be cut somewhere though. To keep costs down, Apple’s latest iMac features an Intel HD 5000 graphics chip. It’s more than quick enough for most apps and everyday use, but when the going gets tough, it’ll struggle more than the Nvidia GPU found in its pricier siblings.

When it comes to connectivity, you’ll find 802.11ac Wi-Fi, two Thunderbolt ports and fourUSB 3.0 ports. That’s the same on all iMac models.

Bundled software includes iLife and iWork, with useful apps like Pages and Numbers.

The new iMac is available now from the Apple Store.
